Type 1 Diabetes
Just The Facts About Type 1 Diabetes
Diabetes starts inside an organ in your belly called the pancreas. There are cells inside your pancreas that make a special liquid called insulin. Your body needs insulin to tell itself when the sugar in your blood should be used for energy in the rest of your body. When you have diabetes, the pancreas has trouble making the insulin your body needs.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease where the body does not make any insulin at all. For some reason, the cells in your body that usually protect you from germs got confused. They thought your beta cells were germs and attacked them. With no beta cells, you can't make insulin.*
